Rain fell on and off on this grey Friday morning. Nevaeh looked out of her bedroom window at the cars passing below and shook her head. Good thing she was going out of town to visit her parents. Tomorrow was her mother’s birthday and her father was throwing her a party. Normally she would call and send a gift but this was her mother’s 50th birthday and from the details her father gave her, it was mandatory that the whole family was in attendance.
Mr. and Mrs. Calvin Harris had moved to Atlanta three years ago. They were both retired and wanted a change of scenery. Mr. Harris was a retired firefighter and Mrs. Harris was a retired college professor. The parents of two beautiful daughters, Nevaeh and her older sister Skye. They were three years apart in age. Skye lived in New York after deciding to stay after she graduated from N.Y.U.
Nevaeh was waiting for Jalaine to get to her place so that Sydney could take them to the airport. In two hours she would be thousands of feet in the air on her way to Atlanta. Nevaeh walked into the living room and flopped down on the couch. She looked around making sure she unplugged everything then she picked up her phone and called Tyler. As she was about to press call his name popped up on her screen.
“Hey you, I was just about to call you.” She smiled.
“Want me to hang up so you can call me?” Tyler joked.
“No.” Nevaeh giggled. “So what’s up.”
“Did Jay get there yet?”
“No she’s on her way. I wish I could see you before I leave.” Nevaeh said sadly.
“Aw baby don’t do me like that, you know I had to work. I wanted to take you to the airport.” Tyler explained.
“I know.”
“I’ll be there to pick you up on Sunday bae.”
“Yeah, so what are your plans for the weekend?”
“After work I might get up with some of my niggas and go to Fat Tuesday’s or a strip club.”
“Yeah Fat Tuesday’s sounds better.”
Tyler laughed, “Alright Fat Tuesday’s it is.”
“Good choice, good choice.” Nevaeh laughed. She heard a knock at the door. “Oh babe Jay is here I’ll text you when we land.”
“Okay baby, I love you. Be safe.”
“I love you too baby and you be careful this weekend. Don’t drink and drive.”
“Okay I won’t.”
“Alright bye baby.” Nevaeh ended the call and got up to answer the door.
“Hey girlie.” Jalaine smiled at Nevaeh.
“What’s up. Come in while I call Syd.” Nevaeh returned the smile.
“Cool.” Jalaine walked past Nevaeh with two big bags.
“Jalaine really?” Nevaeh placed her hands on her hips.
“What?” she asked confused.
“Why you got these big ass bags? We are only going for the weekend.”
“Girl it’s Atlanta, the land of successful black people. I’m on the prowl as soon as we touch down.” Jalaine said dropping her bags.
Nevaeh shook her head and laughed. “Girl I guess.”
“I have an outfit for every scenario that I could think of.” She said flopping down on the couch. All Nevaeh could do was laugh at her cousin as she called Sydney.
